The Navy Yard Town Center Streetscape Earns Design Honor Award from the NJASLA

Improvements include new roadways, sidewalks, lighting, plantings and two parks.

The New Jersey Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects has recognized the The Navy Yard’s Town Center Streetscape with the 2009 Design Honor Award.

The award recognizes the design elements of the rejuvenation of The Navy Yard’s Town Center. The design team’s intent was to implement the initial phases of green infrastructure for an exciting array of future mixed-use development.  Encompassing a 10-block area in The Navy Yard’s historic district, the Town Center Streetscape Master Plan established sustainable design standards for open space and streetscapes, while respecting the site’s architectural character and history.

The plan detailed improvements, many of which have been recently completed or currently underway, including new roadways, sidewalks, lighting, site furnishings, street tree plantings, innovative rainwater gardens, and two new parks. Pedestrian oriented greenways were created to provide strong connections and orientation to the Delaware River waterfront.  Crescent Park, completed in 2005, is a 3.5-acre public park located along the terminus of Broad Street and Diagonal Boulevard, serves as the new entrance gateway to The Navy Yard. The park features a massive curved steel pergola evocative of naval ship architecture. League Island Park, located at 11th and Constitution, will be a 2.5 acre park that will utilize sustainable innovation in its green spaces as it incorporates an expansive stormwater management collection system.

The design team included Wells Appel, Landscape Architects, KS Engineering, and Synterra, Ltd.
